Piano and Clarinet - The Perfect Pair

About the Event

Clarinet and piano make the perfect recital duo. From Mozart to Brahms to Weber to Gershwin, every major composer felt compelled to write music for this pairing. There is a large and delightful repertoire for this combination of instruments, so it is difficult to choose a program, but Dagmar and Rachel have chosen some well-known and lesser-known gems for you!

As a special treat, Dagmar and Rachel have invited local cellist Claire Mindell to join them to perform Beethoven's Piano Trio, Op.11, an absolutely delightful early chamber work for piano, clarinet and cello. Read more about Claire below.

About the Musicians

Dagmar Kilian

Dagmar Kilian studied music at the University of Victoria, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Music and a Master's degree in Piano Performance from the Netherlands. She worked as a freelance pianist for 24 years in groups such as Circle Ensemble, Netherlands Dance Theatre, and Holland Symfonia. Upon returning to Canada in 2008, Dagmar settled in the Comox Valley where she is well known as a piano teacher and accompanist. Dagmar has collaborated as a pianist with Rainbow Youth Theatre, Courtenay Little Theatre, Three Legged Dog Productions, CYMC and the COVAL Choristers performing countless shows and concerts. This concert marks Dagmar's second appearance in the York Place Musical Salon.

Rachel Cooper

Rachel Cooper worked as a freelance musician in the United Kingdom before moving to Canada. Working in orchestras and function bands, she has covered a wide range of genres, taking her across much of Europe, North America and the Middle East. She also enjoyed a few carefree years playing popular cover tunes on cruise ships around the world. Rachel completed a Masters degree in clarinet performance from UVic in 2022 and won the UVic concerto competition. She was awarded a grant from the Canada Arts Council to study Klezmer music in Jerusalem with some of the finest Klezmer clarinetists in the world. Rachel teaches elementary music in Comox, and is enjoying raising her small family of two children and three cats. This concert marks Rachel’s second appearance in the York Place Musical Salon.

Claire Mindell

Claire Mindell is a 16-year-old cellist living in Courtenay, studying with Helena Jung and Dr. Hyun Min Lee. This summer, Claire had the opportunity to attend the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) Young Artists’ Orchestra program, an experience that clarified her desire to pursue music further. Claire has performed as a soloist with the Strathcona Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra. In her fifth year with the SSO, Claire currently sits as their principal cellist. Not only is Claire an avid orchestral musician, but she is also passionate about chamber music and has played with numerous chamber groups through summer programs such as the Vancouver Academy of Music Chamberfest, the Victoria Conservatory Summer Intensive, CYMC, and BUTI, as well as collaborations with esteemed local musicians. She is honoured to be invited to play with Dagmar and Rachel at the York Place Musical Salon and sincerely appreciates all the encouragement and support from the local music community.
